Mental Health “Chemical Imbalances” More Hype than Good Science

As a mental health clinician, I regularly hear clients of mine talk loosely about “chemical imbalances” and how these imbalances are the cause of their depression, anxiety, ADHD, and literally every other psychological stress they experience in life.  I have always been intrigued by this assumption that their troubles in life are often a result of brain chemical imbalances, mostly because I never truly understood what a balanced brain was to begin with! In other words, how do we know if something is imbalanced if we don’t even know what it means to be balanced? Is a balanced brain a brain that is asleep? Is it one that lacks emotion? Or is a balanced brain one that perfectly addresses and corrects every human stress we commonly experience while going through life???

Fortunately, my friend and world renown psychiatry authority Dr. Peter Breggin brings light to the discussion of “chemical imbalances of the brain,” reminding would-be consumers of psychiatric drugs that the discussion around brain balances has a lot less to do with sound science, and a lot more to do with terrific marketing.   Who better to delve into this subject than Dr. Breggin, a psychiatrist and scholar extremely well versed in the biology of the brain and the drugs used to temper and modify neural connections and synapses? As a psychiatrist himself, he not only has the credibility to discuss these issues, but he also has the guts to speak out about his concerns about psychiatrists.

Sadly, millions of people every week fall victim to the “brain imbalance” theory, and in many cases actually exacerbate their symptoms because of the drug prescribed, and not the initial diagnosis!  If you, or someone you love, is currently on a psychiatric medication you might want to tune in to what Dr. Breggin has to offer regarding the biology of the brain theory that has been twisted and manipulated by most of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies in business today.
